Real Salt Lake 1, Galaxy 1

SEATTLE (AP)—David Beckham limped badly, the pain from a bone bruise in his right foot piercing through three pregame injections. Landon Donovan angrily ripped off his armband after watching a penalty shot go sailing over the crossbar.

The image most expected of Beckham and Donovan holding the championship trophy of Major League Soccer for the league’s marquee franchise was replaced by anger and frustration.

Instead, it was those upstarts from Real Salt Lake celebrating their first title.

Robbie Russell scored in the seventh round and the scrappy underdogs from RSL beat the star-studded Galaxy 5-4 on penalties Sunday night to win the league championship.

Russell’s goal set off a wild celebration for Real while Beckham was left holding Donovan by the ears in consolation, telling the league MVP, “great season.”

“It’s Russian roulette,” Beckham said of the penalties. “It’s not a nice way to go out. It’s just the way it is.”

And it’s a result Beckham and the Galaxy will have to accept after getting outplayed in the second half and overtime, then watching RSL goalkeeper Nick Rimando make a pair of saves during penalties to clinch the title.

Rimando swatted away shots by Jovan Kirovski in the third round and smothered Edson Buddle’s weak attempt in the seventh round to set up Russell’s winning shot that beat backup Los Angeles keeper Josh Saunders.

A few thousand RSL fans that made the trip from Utah lined the railings around the field for 30 minutes afterward, sometimes chanting “Nick Rimando”— who was named MVP—while the players celebrated on the confetti covered field.

It was the second straight shootout victory for RSL, which beat Chicago 5-4 on penalties last week for the Eastern Conference championship. Rimando made three saves in the penalty shootout against the Fire and the game MVP came up big again in front of 46,011 fans, the fourth-largest crowd for an MLS Cup.

“It’s nice to say we’re the best team in the league,” RSL coach Jason Kreis said. “… My honest opinion is we deserved to win that game.”

After Mike Magee scored in the 41st minute for Los Angeles off a perfect cross by Donvoan, the Galaxy’s control of play quickly disappeared.

Donovan became a non-factor, as the league MVP was constantly hounded by the Real defense and never given space. The pain killers Beckham took before the game started wearing off early in the second half and his limp became more noticeable.

Meanwhile, RSL kept attacking. Robbie Findley scored in the 64th minute to pull RSL even at 1 and the peppering of the Los Angeles goal continued from there. They nearly scored again before the end of regulation, then missed a trio of opportunities during overtime: Findley’s left-footed shot toward an open goal that was deflected away by Los Angeles defender A.J. DeLaGarza and drives by Findley and Clint Mathis scooting wide.

The Galaxy were fortunate just to reach penalties.

“I don’t think all of them were out of gas,” Real captain Kyle Beckerman said of the Galaxy. “But there were a lot of them gassing at the end.”

In the shootout, Beckham scored first as the first four kicks went in order. After Rimando’s save, Beckerman’s shot was shoved aside by Saunders.

That brought up Donovan, who was 19 for 21 in his MLS career on penalty kicks, the only two misses saved. He tried to go high on Rimando, but sailed the attempt well over the bar.

“I just put it in the air,” Donvoan said. “You know, it’s probably partially due to tired legs and not concentrating in that moment.”

Real had a chance to win it in the fifth round but Andy Williams’ shot was saved by Saunders. Two rounds later, Williams was able to celebrate with Russell as RSL became the second expansion team in MLS history to win the title, joining Chicago in 1998.

“I just went with my gut. I went left, the ball went right. There’s not much I can do,” said Saunders, who replaced starter Donovan Ricketts in the 66th minute after Ricketts injured his right hand in a collision with Findley early in the second half.

Real needed a lot of help on the final weekend of the regular season to make the playoffs and they were discredited by some for having a losing record— 11-12-7—during the regular season. They sneaked in as the No. 8 seed, then upset Columbus and Chicago to reach the championship, and became the second No. 8 seed to win the title, after Los Angeles pulled the trick in 2005.

They’ll also be bringing home the first pro sports championship for the state of Utah since the Utah Stars won the ABA title in 1971.

“As somebody that watches, I really enjoy watching this team play when they’re clicking,” Kreis said. “So it has been fun for me. Today before the game, and really almost the entire game I was just smiling and having fun.”

Congrats to the RSL Team and their fans. I was totally surprised by the result. Perhaps there was not enough excitement in the game due to the lack of resolution during regulation time. We should, however, be proud of the MLS. I believe the future of football soccer in America is wide open and we need to continue supporting it at every level.
Can't weight for the next season to come around.
In the mean time, Cheers to all soccer fans in this beautiful country of ours.

    Jonny A,
It is a lot more satisfying to see a game end in regulation, i agree with you there. But the rest of your rant is crazy. It takes imense skill to beat professional keepers at the spot. For a keeper to save a shot take even more skill. Shootouts have been a part of soccer for a long long time, and it's how champions are decided. If a team can't finish in a s.o. they are lacking an essential championship winning skill. Teams practice penalties along with the countless other skills that make a team great.

MLS didn't make up penalty kicks, it's a part of soccer. And if you don't like the MLS, don't watch it. If you love soccer then you'd want to help make it grow in the US instead of bashing every little thing about it. I know I don't want to have to wait every four years to watch soccer here in the US. MLS started in 96, so it's relatively new compared to other countries. Give it a chance to grow and get the best talent. Either way, I will continue to support the MLS and soccer here so it can eventually rival as a top league.

Johnny A - If you don't like the way soccer is played, then don't watch lol! No one complains when football ends in sudden death overtime, and no one should be complaining about the PK system. If a team cannot win in 90 min reg, 30 min OT, then a champion must be crowned and the PK system is a fair system for that.

As for the game ... congrats RSL!! It's comedy that people are hating so much, but if anyone even bothered to watch the game, they saw RSL owning the midfield for most of the first half and all the rest of the game. RSL out hussled the Galaxy in all phases and did so with 2 of their starting midfield leaving the game. The story here is RSL resilience, not Galaxy poor performance.

RSL deserved to win that game and the only real shame was that Andy Williams was not able to put in the winning PK, which would have been poetic justice given the fact his wife has undergone numerous treatments for her illness up in Seattle. GO RSL!!!!!!!!!

Congratulations to Real Salt Lake in winning the MLS Championship by beating the LA Galaxy 1-1.
Seriously???? Seriously, now? To end a championship game on penalty kicks is a travesty. I cheats both the players and the fans. Yes, soccer matches are long and drawn out, but if you cannot decide a championship game on the field the game should end in a tie. End in a tie you say, let me finish. Ending the game with a tie score is a perfectly acceptable alternative to losing or winning a CHAMPIONSHIP on pure LUCK and nothing else. It takes little skill to kick the ball to a specific spot in the goal. My suggestion, to end the game in a tie is perfect. You end the game in a tie and then play a second game and so on. This would allow for another game for fans to see, bring in additional revenue.
The soccer shootout is a scam. There is truly no skill involved on the part of either player. Soccer goals are a whopping 8 feet high and 24 feet wide. All a goalie can do is guess which way the striker might kick the ball. It's not like in hockey where the goal is 4 feet high and 6 feet wide and the goalie can actually cover the area. And, when a goalie in soccer does block a shot, that has to be the luckiest play in all of sports.
Let them play I say.....Let them play. If you do not want to schedule another game, let them play til their legs fall off. That's what the fans want to see. Shootouts in soccer are zero excitement...you know the striker is going to score.....95% of the time the ball hits the back of the net.
Good luck to Real Salt Lake in the CONCACAF Champions League in 2010-2011.

Now people are complaining about this being on turf? Last I checked, BOTH teams played on the turf, not just one. You gotta give credit where credit is due. That's like having the Super Bowl on a turf field and complaining about it. Both teams played the game on the same field, and Real simply outplayed LA.

I agree 100% with your post!!!!!!!

Having any games on artificial turf is bad enough, but the MLS Cup???? Really did look bush league with the ball bouncing and skipping all night long.

Sure sends a nice message to your players and fans when Qwest field can put grass down for a stinkin friendly match w/ Barca..... but apparently the MLS finals is not important enough.... really?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Pathetic.... as a supporter of the league, I am pi$$ed.

Galaxy fan here but... RSL definitely deserved to win... congrats on a great season, well done.

"fire shouldve won the title...i smell bribery"

Right. MSL has a lot to gain by having a team from a small market win the cup. And doing it with only 20% of the Galaxy payroll. Who'd be bribing whom???

I sense what you're smelling is not bribery, but a foul upper lip.

Real Salt Lake owned that game and Nick Rimando owns the penalty spot. RSL looked bad in the first half until LA scored, then they decided to control the game. Second half and OT belonged to RSL, unlucky that they didn't get a 2nd goal.

Lot a haters out there, I'm sorry you can get lucky and win a game sometimes, but to beat Columbus twice, Chicago, and then LA, no luck there. Poor Donovan, America's best player, needs to learn how to play under pressure or America has no shot in South Africa.

Thanks Real for an awesome season and Utah's first championship in forever.

I saw the game. Great game and very long! The most exciting part was when they got to the penalties. I was so nervous just watching it. I had a feeling that RSL would win it after Donovan missed his PK. Fair win.

What a crappy game. Team Uninspired vs. Team Boring. One team refuses to hustle like their title should be anointed unto them and the other playing with a complete lack of creativity and a negative style of play reminiscent of the '86 World Cup in Mexico that is sure to push US soccer back to the Stone Age. Such a great season filled with so many exciting games only to be ruined by a star-studded team of the walking dead and the better-safe-than-sorry ugly football of RSL. Three Cheers to both the LA Galaxy and Real Salt Lake -- congrats on making the MLS look Real Boring to the rest of the world.
